Most shade sails are waterproof and made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fabric or polyester fabric that stretches and allows air to pass through. All products provide some level of UV protection (usually up to 95%) and are resistant to the elements. While HDPE is not inherently waterproof, its ventilated mesh structure allows water to pass through and prevents the formation of potentially damaging puddles.
That said, if you live somewhere where it snows or rains in the winter, you may need to store your shade sail for part of the year. If you purchase your shade sail with a hardware kit, the parts should be made of rust-resistant stainless steel. Additionally, most grommets used on shade sails also have an exterior coating that resists rust and corrosion.
